Make your senior portraits awsome!

how to look your best
portraits are best when the viewers eye is drawn to your face.  Unless you choose your clothing carefully, it’s possible for the viewer’s eye to be diverted to the clothing instead of where it should be focused.

Close up portraits
For your yearbook picture or other head and shoulders or closeup poses, dress in something very simple both in style and color.  Boys can choose a suit, sport coat or sweater.  For girls, a plain dress, sweater or blouse with a simple neckline is best.  Both boys and girls should wear long sleeves to keep the eye from being drawn to the flesh of the arm.

Clothing color & style make the difference
Proper clothing allows the face to dominate the portrait, with all other elements being secondary.  Against a medium or dark background, colors that photograph best for the yearbook portrait and other closeup poses are medium to dark tones of green, brown, rust, wine, or blue.  Darker shades are more slimming.

  • Against a medium or dark background avoid light colors tht approximiate flesh tones such as beige, tan, peach, pink, white and yellow.  These colors not only dominate a portrait and overpower the face, but also drain color from the face and make the wearer appear unusually pale.
  • Bare shoulders or tops with spaghetti straps oten make the subject look heavier and take the eye away from the face
  • Especially bright colors such as red, orange, or pink, will ruin a portrait because their intensity overwhelms the face
  • Stripes, plaids, checks, and bold prints also draw the eye away from the face and do not photograph well.

Informal poses and special styles tell the world who you are
Informal portraits invite much more variety in clothing color and style.  Girls can choose a favorite sports outfit, dress, prom dress, shorts jeans outfit - the clothes you really enjoy.  Possible choices for boys include a suit, jeans outfits, a casual or sports jerzy, or a school or other jeacket.  Bring extra clothing choices and we will

About Clothing Color, Tone, and Style

When more than one person is to appear in the portrait or when a special stylistic effect is desired, clothing and prop choices can make or break a portrait.

Skin tone considerations
Wheather working with light or dark complexions, the objective is always for the face to dominate the portrait.  Accordingly, skin highlights bust be the lightest, brightest, or most intense areas of the portrait.  So when a medium to dark background is used, all subjects photograph best in medium to dark tones, whatever the skin tones.  Your photographer will guide you on what backgrounds will work best for the effect you are trying to achieve.

Clothing for Small Groups
Couples or small groups should choose simple garments within the same tonal ranges.  When subjects appear in a mixture of light and dark tones together, there is visual confusion.  As the light color comes forward the dark color recedes and forces the eye to go back and forth between the two in an unpleasent way.

Clothing for families
In a family group, proper clothing coordination is critical.  When decorating a home, a major concern is to coordinate the colors and tones of the walls, carptes, drapes, and furnishings.  Similar coordination is necessary when selecting clothing for a group portrait.  Choose clothing in the same tonal range so that no single member of the family stands out because the clothing is too light or bright as compared to the rest of the group.  Proper clothing selection makes the difference between a protrait that appears to be a group of seemingly unrelated individuals and one in which every member of the family belongs to the group.

Creating Style and personality
Our goal is to create portraiture as individual as the subjects we photograph.  Our tools include various styles, techinques and settings that make each portrait a unique artwork.  For example casual clothing compliments portaits made in the outdoors while images with story telling content or which portray special interest of the subject make decorative personal statements.

Dressing for the Perfect Portrait

Tips on prepairing for your portraits
Memorable portraits take careful planning, and the clothing you choose is very important to the success of your photo session.  These guidelines will help you to make important decisions about the clothing and style of your portraiture.

Clothing for individuals
The goal of any fine portrait is to direct the viewer’s eye to the face(s) in the portrait.  All other elements should be secondary.  For individuals, simple long-sleeved garments in medium to dark tones of brown, gray, burgandy, green or blue are pleasing choices when photographed against a medium or dark background.  Because darker clothing is slimming, it often is a good choice for close-up, full length, or three quoarter length portraits in which a medium to dark background is used.

  • Turtle neck or V-neck shirts are flattering provided that neither is exaggerated in style.  Avoid very wide or particularly deep V-neck garments or bulky cowlneck sweaters that completely hide the neck.
  • For close-up portraits, long sleeves are essential for teens and adults, as bare arms call attention to themselves and will overpower the face.
  • Women being photographed in full length should wear long skirts, pants, or dark stockings in order to keep the eye from being directed toward the legs and away from the face.
  • If feet are to show in the portrait, assure that shoes and stocking are in keeping with the visual intent of the portrait.
  • Men should be clean shaven or facial hair should be carefully groomed, with their hair cut about one week before the portrait session.
  • Women should be photographed whenever they are happiest with their hair in relation to the time it is styled.

Choices for timless portraits of children

Clothing, style, and prop choices can affect the artistic success of any portrait.  This guide will illustrate that whatever the age or style simple garments photograph the best.

infants and toddlers…
Little ones photograph best in simple clothing that doesnt overpower their delecate features.  Whites and pastels are classic choices.  Casual play clothing works well for older babies.  This is also a great time for no clothes at all!

Children…
A childs personality can shine in understated clothing or outfits.  Choose props that express their personality and favorite playtime activities as well as any sports or hobbies they really enjoy.

Pre-Teens and Teens…
Clothing locations and props that show moods activites and achievements are good choices for these ages.  Their personalities are blossoming and they are finding out who they are and want to be in the future.  Let them make some choices to ensure the shoot is a success.

Siblings and Families…
When more than one person in in the portrait, clothing must be coordinated so that it stays wihtin the same style and tonal range.  Try to avoid patterns and stripes because they can cause problems in digital photography and draw away from the subject matter in negative ways.
